Former world No.1 Kim Clijsters will not return to the Australian Open in January, contrary to what she had originally hoped for, she announced on Monday.

"I had to make the decision that I will not be able to compete in January," said the 36-year-old Belgian on Twitter, saying she is being rehabilitated after a knee injury.

Winner of four Grand Slam tournaments and World No. 1 for 20 weeks, Kim Clijsters announced in September his wish to return to the circuit in early 2020 with a lean and "flexible" schedule. She retired after the 2012 US Open.
