The five cameras begin to be installed from mid-November. They are temporary and should sit up for three months, it is a so-called 90-day decision.

- It is a crime against people that we want to fight with the cameras as far as possible. Generally speaking, it is about robbery and ill-treatment, says Kim Kanefur, project manager for camera surveillance in the local police area City.

The local police area of Gothenburg city has decided to set up the cameras on Avenyn, which GP was the first to tell. This is an area where there is a risk of serious crime according to the police.

- We set them up because we have Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and Christmas shopping that will soon start. Statistically, we have crimes happening on Avenyn - and the more people move in one place, the greater the risk that there will be crimes there, says Kanefur.

Need better investigative material

With the camera surveillance, the police hope to be able to clear up more crimes and prosecute more criminals.

- We hope that they are helpful in the investigation, that we get even better material. But also that they have some deterrent effect and that you get a reduction in crime. And we may be able to interrupt crimes when they are committed - if possible. But the biggest win is for investigative purposes.

Kanefur believes that monitoring can also lead to increased perceived security in people in the area.

- It's also a positive effect - that people in the area may feel that you're not alone - that the cameras see one, says Kanefur.

The city police will continue with their regular weekend activities on the Avenue, the cameras will be a complement.

Crimes are committed in more places in the city - why monitor the avenue?

- We are working on getting surveillance throughout Gothenburg - Järntorget, Heden and so on. Hopefully, it will be next year. But now we chose to focus on an area where we can collect the cameras close to each other geographically.

What happens to the cameras on the Avenue after three months have passed?

- Then they are picked down. The idea is that fixed cameras will come up in the coming year. In the long term, the plan is to set up between 300-400 fixed cameras in Gothenburg city.
