The Brazilian authorities had detected on July 29 an oil spill more than 700 km from the coast of the state of Paraiba.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said on Sunday that "the worst is yet to come" for the mysterious oil spill that has already sullied over 200 beaches in the north-east of the country for three months.

"What has happened and has been picked up so far is a small amount of what has been spilled in. The worst is yet to come," Bolsonaro said in an interview with Record TV. The president added that "all the indices" indicated the Greek tanker "Bouboulina", that the Brazilian authorities had already accused Friday to be the person in charge of the ecological disaster after the analysis of satellite data. The Greek tanker company, Delta Tankers, had denied.

This is a "criminal" act, accused Mr. Bolsonaro who said he expected "a much bigger disaster". The Brazilian authorities had detected on July 29 an oil spill more than 700 km from the coast of the state of Paraiba. Oil began to appear on August 30 on the northeastern coast, then moving south into Bahia State. Some 2,000 km of coastline has been affected, including the Abrolhos region near Bahia, a sanctuary for humpback whales and unique coral formations.
