The Good Herderkerk in Hoogmade in South Holland was hit by a very large fire on Monday. The fire department regards the building as lost. The re-extinguishing work is expected to continue well into the night.

The roof has collapsed and the steeple of the church has gone up in the flames. According to the security region, the complete collapse of the church cannot be excluded. The construction is unstable, says a spokesperson.

The telephone masts attached to the church were destroyed by the sea of flames. This may have consequences for the mobile accessibility in the South Holland village and surroundings.

Because the re-construction will take a long time, the emergency services place fences around the church. Tuesday what will be done with the remains of the church will be looked at. The building may be demolished.

Church goes up in flames in South Holland village Hoogmade

Fire started during church work

The fire broke out around 12.40 during repair work at the building. Workers were burning off paint at that time. Emergency services flocked to get the situation under control.

The emergency services called urgently in the afternoon not to come and watch the fire. Several NL Alerts have been sent for Hoogmade and the surrounding area. The last message, which was sent early in the evening, states that the smoke that is released is no longer dangerous.

However, this does not mean that all evacuated residents can go home again. Some have to spend the night elsewhere. In the afternoon, due to 'risk of falling', homes and a primary school around the church were evacuated.
