Committee «Storms and Hurricanes»
Majed Nasser, Head of Marine Forecasting Department at the National Meteorological Center, a member of the Committee of Storms and Cyclones in the North Indian Ocean, the Sea of Oman and the Bay of Bengal, said that the names of storms and cyclones are not chosen randomly or locally. In the past, eight of the northern Indian Ocean countries joined the UAE and four other countries last year, bringing its membership to 13.
In response to a question by Emirates Today, Nasser said: “Each year, the members of the committee choose a name for a storm, and the names are placed on a list similar to the periodic table, so that each name is used in alphabetical order of the member states of the committee, and when any tropical storm is formed Name it according to the order of the names in the table », stressing that it is not required that the name of the storm is chosen, by the countries that pass by or affected by them.
