The committee initiative is about reducing unnecessary plastic use and is in line with the project “Plastbanta Västerås city operations” received by the municipal council. That project will only start in 2020, while the Cultural Committee is already starting.

The first thing that will be done is to produce a gross list of plastic products that should not be purchased or used by the municipality. Then they will be replaced by substitutes. Thereafter, a dialogue will be held with associations to reduce the use of plastics based on the list.

- We hope the plastic will disappear from our operations. Culture and sports come into contact with many westerners in everyday life. We believe that we can establish good habits regarding the use of plastics, ”says Markus Lindgren (MP), chairman of the Culture Committee.

"Appears to take on the business suit and see what's available"

According to Lindgren, the initiative must be accommodated within the existing budget. However, the City Council, which will start its work next year, has set up a special budget for its project. The schedule is currently not nailed as the administration does not know how much plastic it is about.

- We can't sit at the town hall and identify what plastics we have. It is important to take on the business costume and see what is available, says Markus Lindgren (MP).
