by Tiziana Di Giovannandrea 03 November 2019Still separatist protests in Catalonia, particularly in Barcelona, against the visit of King Felipe VI, scheduled to start on Monday 4 November.

Several hundred people blocked the central artery of Barcelona's Avenida Diagonal to disagree with the visit of the King of Spain. In the next few hours the king will accompany, together with Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor in the awarding of the Princess of Girona 2019 prizes, which for two days (November 4th and 5th) will be held at the Palace of Congresses of Catalonia.

The awarding of prizes is a task that belongs to the heir to the throne of Spain, precisely the princess Leonor as future queen.

On the event, however, lies the heavy risk of protests and heavy protests, if not the boycott because of the climate that has been living in Catalonia for weeks with serious violence.

The protest, called by the self-appointed Committees of Defense of the Republic (Cdr) and supported by other independent platforms, takes place in front of the Palacio de Congresos and the Juan Carlos I hotel, placed under surveillance by the riot police.

The students who started a camp five days ago in the Plaza Universitat de Barcelona joined the demonstration.

The Zarzuela Palace, residence of the king, did not disclose either the place where the royal family will be staying or the time of arrival in Barcelona. The entire perimeter located opposite the Palacio de Congresos and access to the Juan Carlos I hotel was fenced off by the security forces in the early hours of the afternoon.

The presence of King Felipe VI in Barcelona, with the queen and the heir to the throne, represents the first stay in Catalonia after the heavy sentences against former separatist leaders. The tension and concern in Spain is quite high.
