An investigation for "apology of terrorism" was opened after a knife attack this Saturday, November 2 committed in a police station in Saint-Denis Reunion.
The incident occurred in the lobby of a police station in Saint-Denis Reunion. A woman was assaulted by a man in her twenties who placed a knife under her throat, shouting "Allah Akhbar", before being disarmed.
The incident did not hurt. An investigation was opened for "voluntary violence and apology of terrorism," told Agence France-Presse the prosecutor of Saint-Denis Eric Tuffery.
Originally from Mayotte, the suspect had been living in Reunion for several years. He was known to the police, says a source close to the case, without further details. The motivations of the aggressor are not yet known at this stage.
This is the first time an assault of this type has occurred inside a La Reunion police station.
In 2017, in Saint-Benoît, in the east of the department, a man suspected of Islamist radicalization shot at the police officers who came to arrest him at his home. Two police officers were injured.
Two years earlier, a jihadist sector had been dismantled in this island of the Indian Ocean. It was headed by a 21-year-old Salafist preacher, who had urged several young people from Reunion to start jihad in Syria.
This aggression came a few days after President Emmanuel Macron's visit to Reunion and Mayotte .
