01 November 2019The Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, on an institutional visit to Rabat, was received by the Moroccan Prime Minister, Saadeddine El Othmani. "We talked about the Mediterranean and Libya, our common concern for the danger of terrorism and migration flows," the head of the foreign ministry said in a post on Facebook. "We also talked about strengthening our trade, because we need to start looking at Africa as a development opportunity," he added. Morocco is among the countries with which Italy already has bilateral agreements on the repatriation of migrants who are not entitled to asylum.

"I am happy that this is my first official visit. I am here because we have to work even more on our economic exchanges that allow us to strengthen our position in the Mediterranean", said Di Maio. The head of the Moroccan government underlined the "great political convergence between the two countries at the regional level and on the common challenges. And also from the economic point of view we have good relations that can improve", he pointed out. Among the economic dossiers addressed, also the investment and energy sectors.

"On Libya, only a non-military political solution"
As regards the Libyan situation, the head of the Farnesina reiterated: "We are very worried about the Libyan dossier, not only for the migration problem but also for the terrorist danger, which we have a few hundred kilometers from our coasts. As Italy we ask "Let there be no interference, we must facilitate the work of the UN and de-escalate it, respecting the arms embargo. On Libya, the solution can only be political, not military." The head of the Moroccan government noted the "convergence of points of view" with Italy on Libya, stating that it is necessary "to work all together for stability and security in the Mediterranean".
