Spain will host the international climate conference COP25 in early December, the UN announced on Friday. Chile had resigned Wednesday to organize the event because of the social crisis it goes through.

"We are pleased to announce that the COP Bureau has agreed that # COP25 will take place from December 2 to 13 in Madrid, Spain," said Patricia Espinosa, UN Climate Officer.

More than 25,000 delegates expected

Chilean President Sebastian Piñera announced Wednesday that his country, struggling with a social protest that does not weaken, renounced to host the COP25 in December, as well as the summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC), which was to have place in Santiago mid-November.

The UN, plunged into uncertainty by this brutal withdrawal, said in the wake that she "studied alternatives" to host the COP25. On Thursday, Sebastian Piñera announced that Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez had "generously offered to organize the COP25 in Madrid on the same dates as this conference was scheduled in Chile."

Madrid had confirmed this proposal, made "given the short time available and the importance of ensuring that the COP25 is held normally". About 25,000 delegates, including young Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, were expected in Santiago from 2 to 13 December.
