The world climate conference was to be held in Chile in December. The unprecedented protest in the country also prompted the authorities to cancel the summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.

On Wednesday, October 30, Chilean President Sebastian Piñera said he felt " a deep sense of pain " by announcing that his country was giving up organizing the Apec Summit of Heads of State which should have been held in Santiago on 16 and 17 November as well as the COP25 that was to take place from December 2nd to 13th.

At the Apec summit, which gathered the various Asian and American leaders, an agreement to end the trade war was hoped for between the United States and China, as President Trump had said on Monday (October 28th).

For COP25, nearly 25,000 people from delegations around the world were expected including many activists to try to put pressure on policymakers. The aim of this COP25 is to encourage States to fulfill their most important commitments in the fight against climate change.

Currently, the country is experiencing a major social crisis. Despite a change of government and initial steps to calm the situation, thousands of protesters were still on the streets protesting social inequalities on Tuesday (October 29th).

Brazil had already resigned to hold COP25 on November 28, 2019 following the election of climate president Jair Bolsonaro. This decision was officially taken for budgetary reasons.
