Sujith Wilson, who was stranded in a narrow well for 80 hours, has died after trying to save him failed, officials in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu said Tuesday.

Sujith, two years old, fell into the well last Friday while playing with his peers.He initially hung at a depth of 10 meters, but later slid deeper into the abandoned well 180 meters deep.

Officials said "special equipment" was used to retrieve the body from the narrow well, which was drilled to extract water (a diameter of 30 centimeters), and rescue teams tried to dig another hole parallel to the well where the child fell.

The official said the region S. "The body was recovered using special equipment and was in a decomposed state," Sivaraso told reporters, and a team of doctors took about 45 minutes to confirm his death and report back.

The body was sent to a government hospital for autopsy and then handed over to his parents, who later buried him.

Efforts to rescue the child included German digging machines, firefighters, rescue workers and attempts to deliver oxygen to the child, but there was some slowdown due to rocky soil and rain.

Rescue teams used a thermal camera to monitor the temperature of the baby as it was oxygenated through a tube. Rescuers said the boy was unconscious but was breathing until Sunday morning, but have not been able to verify his condition since.

The story received widespread attention in India, which was celebrating Diwali (a religious festival celebrated by Hindus and Sikhs in the autumn) during the weekend, and prayers were held in temples, mosques and churches throughout Tamil Nadu for the child.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed concern about the boy, before expressing his condolences after the boy's death was announced.

Sujith's death is the latest in a series of incidents involving children falling into abandoned wells in rural India.

In June, a two-year-old boy died after spending four days trapped inside a well in Punjab.

In 2006, rescuing a six-year-old boy became a headline when he was safely pulled out in Haryana after being stuck in an 18-meter well for 48 hours.

Wells are very common throughout the Indian countryside, where they are a major source of local farmers.
