29 October 2019 "The European Commission is not considering the possibility of rejecting Italy's budget maneuver". This was stated by the vice president of the Commission responsible for the euro, Valdis Dombrovskis. "If the Commission had intended to ask for a revised budgetary planning document, we would have respected the procedural deadlines. Consequently, as you see, it is not what is currently being considered" - Dombrovskis said. In the event of rejection, according to the rules of the Stability and Growth Pact, the Commission should have asked Italy for a revised version of the draft budget plan between today and tomorrow.

However, Dombrovskis stressed that "concerns" remain over Italy's budget and he recalled sending a letter to the Economy Minister, Roberto Gualtieri, asking for clarification. "We will do an evaluation with the other Member States. We do not yet have all the inputs including economic forecasts," Dombrovskis explained.
