It was early May of this year that the 57-year-old pilot was out flying a glider. When he had eight kilometers left to Borås airport, the thermals, that is, the winds, became weaker. As a result, the aircraft dropped sharply and was too low to reach the runway.

One thing that made the whole thing even more difficult was that the pilot had a headwind. Soon enough, according to the State Accident Investigation Commission's text, he realized that he had to find a field to land on when the auxiliary engine did not start.

The pilot decided to land on the airfield that Boras model flying club has and began to prepare for it. However, the altitude decreased faster than expected and the planned field could therefore not be reached.

Tried to land in the traffic direction

Instead, it became national highway 41 which served as an emergency runway and the pilot tried to land in the traffic direction on the right side of the road.

But during the landing phase, the aircraft hit the roof of a car in the right file and the windshield of a car in the oncoming direction. The right wing on the plane also hit a large road sign while the left wing hit the oncoming car. Then it stopped.

And now the State Accident Investigation Board finds that there was a high risk that a more serious accident than the one that actually happened could have occurred. Neither the pilot nor the car drivers were physically injured in the accident and the pilot was able to get out of the plane himself.
