In order to lower the death toll, the Swedish Transport Administration has decided to lower speeds on a number of roads in Sweden. Each region within the Swedish Transport Administration determines for themselves when they implement the changes. In the East region where Västmanland is included, the speed will be lowered as early as November. The reductions will take place on national roads 66 and 68. The new speeds will start to apply sometime between November 4 and November 6. Then the roads should be signposted.

- Speed reductions are just one of the changes we are making to lower the death rate.

In addition to the new speeds, the Swedish Transport Administration will, among other things, increase the number of mobile speed cameras, build more meeting separations (roads that are either highway or have middle barrier), try to improve the traffic situation at accident-crossed junctions and work more closely with the traffic police.

Part of the Zero Vision

Since 1997, when the Swedish Parliament decided that the Zero Vision should apply to the road safety work in Sweden, the Swedish Transport Administration has worked actively to reduce the deaths. The zero vision simply means that no one should be killed or seriously injured as a result of traffic accidents.

The speed will only be lowered on the road that lies within the boundaries of Västmanland. In the county of Dalarna, the Swedish Transport Administration has chosen to wait to reduce speeds to next year. As the national roads pass through both counties, the 90 lanes will remain for a while on the valley side.

- We did not think we could wait to implement these changes, says Klas Larsson.
