The House of Commons rejected on Monday, October 28, the holding of early elections on December 12, as demanded by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Only 299 elected voters voted in favor of this early return to the polls, but it took 434 for the head of the government to meet the qualified majority of two-thirds of the elected and win the case on his request. Seventy voted against, the others did not take part in the vote.

"We will not allow this paralysis to continue. This room can not hold hostage any longer our country," commented Boris Johnson immediately before announcing the tabling, in the evening, of a short bill to maintain the holding such a poll. The draft will be submitted to the vote of the deputies Tuesday, October 29th.

This separate parliamentary route will require only a simple majority, not the two-thirds majority required on Monday.
