It was just before midnight that an employee was alerted that "there was a movement outside the bed" of a resident. The employee then visited another resident and did not respond to the alarm until after a quarter. The beonde was found lying on the floor below the bed and it turned out that the bed gate was only commissioned at the foot end.

The nurse was called and she came to the accommodation after about half an hour. The resident was bleeding from the forehead and said they had neck pain. At the hospital, the doctor later found that the patient had a fracture of the cervical spine.

- It is clear that this is very unhappy and of course regrettable. Well, we all want to work with health care, says Eva Backlund, medically responsible nurse at Vardaga's private elderly home S: t Knut in Falsterbo.

The company has failed

According to the health care company, the staff that night the patient pulled up the bed gate, but probably did not do it quite correctly. Therefore, it fell to one side during the night, causing the occupant to fall out of bed.

The Chief Operating Officer has now taken a number of measures to prevent similar incidents from recurring. Among other things, the employees were informed about the incident immediately after it happened. The physiotherapist and occupational therapist has also informed the staff about how bed gates should be used and monitored continuously.

The healthcare company admits that they had unclear routines for how bed gates should be used.
