For more than a year, the Preschool Guitar at Rödäng in Umeå has been working on a major project on sustainable development. Now you are trying to completely demolish the meat, which Folkbladet was the first to tell. The idea came from one of the employees and has been received with open arms from the parents.

- There have only been positive reactions and many are grateful, says Markus Sandström, preschool teacher at the Guitar, and adds:

- The children have also seemed very interested and peppy.

No one gets meat

The guitar has three departments with children between one and six years. In two weeks the project will start and then breakfast, lunch and snacks will be completely vegetarian. For those who would rather have meat, there are no exceptions

- Anyone who wants vegetarian food today applies for a special diet, and we guessed that the reverse would apply now. But we have received an answer from Måltidsservice that it will not be arranged, says Markus Sandström.

Dietician connected

A dietitian has been engaged to ensure that the children receive everything they need. After Christmas and New Year, an evaluation will be made.

- We believe and hope that this can become permanent. So is the idea, but it felt a bit drastic to go out with it right away. We must evaluate properly first, says Markus Sandström.

Although the reactions have been positive so far, Markus Sandström says that he is aware that special diet is a hot potato.

- We want to be clear that there is nothing political about this. This is something we do because we believe it has a positive climate impact.

At Måltidsservice, which is responsible for the food at preschools and schools in the municipality of Umeå, encourages the attempt at the Guitar, which now becomes the first preschool in the municipality that tries to completely remove the meat from the menu.

- As long as you have a consensus and inform parents, we do not want to be a brake pad. We see it as a positive initiative, ”says Maria Svensson, head of menu and production at Måltidsservice.
