It was a joyous call on Friday morning when the electric ferry Elvy was opened at Stenpiren in central Gothenburg.

The electric hybrid ferry is the city's first and, according to Västtrafik, a step in the right direction in their climate goals.

- She will reduce fuel consumption and thus emissions of health and climate-impacting substances. And that is very important for us, we have very high climate goals, says Hanna Björk, sustainability manager at West Traffic.

Costs SEK 15 million

The ferry takes more people on board, and sounds less. While contributing to fewer emissions. The bill? SEK 15 million, for the electrification itself.

- We will reduce our climate impact by 90 percent by 2035, so it is extremely tough. And to do that, city traffic needs to be electrified and action needs to be taken on ship traffic as well.

Elvy will run on electricity for about four to six hours, and then switches to normal operation. The ferry will be put into regular traffic on line 286 between Stenpiren and Lindholmen in November.
