25 October 2019The president of Bolivia Evo Morales has won a fourth term as head of the country. The confirmation comes from the official results published by the electoral commission after counting 99.97 percent of the ballot papers. Morales thus won 47.07 percent of preferences against 36.51 percent of challenger Carlos Mesa. The ten points of separation between the two means that it is not necessary to proceed with the ballot. Morales had already claimed the victory in recent days and had asked the protesters who contested irregularities in the electoral process to provide evidence.

US and 3 other countries are asking for a runoff
The governments of the United States, Brazil, Argentina and Colombia, however, have requested a run-off in the Bolivian elections after the incumbent president, Evo Morales, declared his victory against the challenger Carlos Mesa. The group of countries called on the Bolivian government "to restore credibility in its electoral system", invoking a second round between the two challengers. Observers from the Organization of American States (Osa) expressed concern about the counting of votes, which sparked riots, a general strike and accusations of fraud by the opposition.
