This week is the Work Environment Week and many unions are therefore monitoring the work environment at workplaces all over the country. Byggnads has focused on scaffolding as many accidents have occurred during the year, some with fatal outcome. In total, there are 1,200 positions across the country. If a scaffold is considered to be a danger to life and health, the safety representatives have the right to stop the work.
- What happens in the construction industry is that there are many subcontractor stages coming in, where you are often afraid to resign, says Niklas Landstedt, regional safety representative for Byggnads in Östergötland.
When we agreed to an inspection in Östergötland at the beginning of the week, the regional safety representative was forced to close two construction sites due to security risks.
- In a workplace, people hung out in the armhole and stayed in the windowsill. And the scaffolding was mounted upside down, says Niklas Landstedt.
