Gael Monfils qualified for the quarter-finals of the ATP 500 Vienna tournament on Thursday against Jannik Sinner 6-3, 7-6 (10/8), taking revenge on the Italian who beat him in Antwerp.
After a first set win 6-3, the Frenchman, N.14 World, was hooked in the second by the young Italian prodigy, N. 101. But Gael Monfils held on, scoring a shutout to return to 6-6.
The tricolor N.1 first dominated the tie-break (5-1) before being joined by Sinner (5-5). After leaving his first match point, Gael Monfils concluded on ace (10-8).
With this victory, Gael Monfils did not repeat the scenario of last week, during the tournament of Antwerp (Belgium). Jannik Sinner, 18, had eliminated the Frenchman in the second round (6-3, 6-2).
Gael Monfils will face Slovenian Alja on Friday? Bedene (72), victorious Thursday of French Gilles Simon in three sets (6-2, 3-6, 6-3).
