24 October 2019La Fifa has awarded China the inaugural edition of the 24-team World Cup for clubs: the president of the association Gianni Infantino announced it, calling it a "historic decision". The new tournament, added Infantino at a press conference in Shanghai, "will be able to involve anyone, it will be the first competition that will see the best clubs in the world on the field".

The appointment is for June-July 2021, with the go-ahead unanimously despite the doubts of the past months expressed above all by the European clubs.
