The other day, the president apologized to the Chilean people for not fighting inequality in the past. However, it has had no effect on people and the protests continue.

The country's largest unions have announced general strikes and demonstrations will be held around the world on Thursday, including in Växjö at Speakers Corner.

- We will knock on our pots and show our support for the Chilean people who are fighting on the streets and squares in this now, says Fanny Battistutta.

It is not about 30 pesos but about 30 years

The demonstrations started on October 14 when young people plunged into the metro in protest of the increased metro tariff in the capital Santiago.

The tariff was increased by 30 pesos, which was enough to arouse the anger of the youth and their protest action became the spark that started a wave of violent and peaceful demonstrations around the country.

- In the last 30 years and regardless of the right or left government, nothing has improved in Chile. People cannot afford to go to school, pensions are not long enough, healthcare is poor, transport is expensive, etc. It is only the rich and their children who can get good education and decide in society, says Fanny Battistutta.
