We have just learned that a few weeks ago the Kenyan police carried out a major crackdown by dismantling a terrorist cell in Mombasa on the coast. A group of suspects who could be linked to Somali Islamist terrorists shebabs.

Last Sunday, Kenya celebrated "Mashujaa Day", one of its most important festivals. But the day could have been bereaved by one or more attacks. On 1 October, security forces raided accommodation in Mombasa, the big coastal city. Three suspects were killed and several others arrested. Police seized an arsenal and more than twenty mobile phones.

According to the authorities, it was a terrorist cell planning attacks on Sunday in Mombasa and other coastal sites. The operation followed an alert launched a month ago. Police began to monitor the movements and communications of individuals suspected of being linked to Somali Shebab terrorists .

A suspect was apprehended. His interrogation proved useful. Immediately, local security agencies broadcast vigilance messages to their staff. Police have tightened their controls around police stations, schools, churches, hotels, beaches and supermarkets.

In the intercepted communications, suspected terrorists reported sending seven accomplices to Kwale and Kilifi counties to launch attacks. The authorities then extended the alert to the entire region around Mombasa. Finally, the net of October 1st was realized. At least two suspects pleaded not guilty. Others could still be in nature. The state of alert remains high in the zone.
