  • Moncloa.Sanchez refuses to pick up Torra's phone for not unchecking herself from violence

The leader of the PSC, Miquel Iceta , has taken this morning the condemnation of the violence done by Quim Torra following an interview with the president of the Generalitat on the US network CNN. Torra's refusal to explicitly demarcate acts of violence in Catalonia after the sentence of the process has been the reason that Pedro Sánchez has wielded for not picking up the phone to the Catalan president and for refusing to meet him during the visit he He made it to Barcelona on Monday.

"The best of the reactions he has had has been tonight," Iceta said in an interview with Cadena Ser, in which he has argued that the words spoken by Torra on CNN represent a much stronger condemnation of the violence he had done so far.

The statements of Torra to which Iceta has referred are: "I have always been on the side of a peaceful and democratic movement with the flag of dialogue and nonviolence. I stay here and I will never leave here. I do not it represents violence and condemnation. " Subsequently, Torra added that "anyone who has committed a violent act must be punished."

Iceta has argued that this implies a change of position of Torra, which would imply that in his opinion Pedro Sánchez no longer has reasons to not talk to Torra. In any case, the leader of the Catalan socialists has insisted on his proposal to open a negotiation between the Catalan parties and has urged Torra to open a round of contacts.

Conversations with ERC

The socialists themselves are already maintaining their own contacts with the independence forces, as Iceta has revealed in the interview. Asked about whether the acting Vice President of the Government, Carmen Calvo, has spoken with the Catalan Vice President, Pere Aragonès, since the sentence, Iceta said that he knows that contacts have occurred, but that he does not know "in what terms".

Calvo and Aragonès "have a relationship when the Pedralbes agreement and budget negotiation were attempted, and fortunately it is still open," explained the leader of the PSC.

Indeed, just a year ago, Pedro Sánchez's political project was to govern with the support of Podemos and ERC. To do this, he agreed on budgets with Pablo Iglesias and opened a negotiation with the Catalan independentistas that culminated in the Pedralbes summit referred to by Iceta. Later, however, the negotiations broke down, ERC did not support the Budgets and Sanchez called the elections on April 28.

The objective of the socialists, however, is to recover that relationship, as can be seen from the words of Iceta. "The relationship with ERC is frankly," he said, adding even that "they agree on some things," such as the need for regional elections in Catalonia as soon as possible. The surveys predict for both formations a rise in votes and seats.
