The British government "no longer advises against travel" to the northeastern Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, the British embassy said in a statement Tuesday.

"This announcement follows close cooperation between aviation security experts in the UK and Egypt," said British Ambassador Jeffrey Adams.

"We will work closely with airlines that want to resume flights."

Britain's Middle East and North Africa Minister Andrew Morrison said: "I am pleased today to announce the lifting of the current restrictions."

The British government had been recommending that air travel to and from the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh should be made only when necessary after the bombing of a Russian airliner in 2015 that killed 224 people, all on board shortly after take-off.

The attack, claimed by the Islamic State group, prompted Russia to suspend all flights to Egypt for several years and prompted a number of countries to stop flights to Sharm el-Sheikh.

Britain is the second country to lift the no-fly zone after Egypt, which decided to resume flights between Moscow and Cairo in April 2018, while it has not resumed flights to tourist resorts so far.

welcome
The Egyptian Ministry of Civil Aviation welcomed the decision, saying in a statement, "This decision ... is an indicator of relations and trust between the Arab Republic of Egypt and the United Kingdom and the culmination of the strategic coordination that took place between the government of the two countries."

"The decision to lift the travel ban is a message to the world that Egypt is safe and that the Egyptian government places tourist safety as a priority to achieve by all means," Tourism Minister Rania al-Mashat said in a statement on Tuesday.

The number of British visitors to Egypt in 2018 amounted to 415 thousand tourists.

Tourism in Egypt, which is one of the most important sources of foreign exchange in the country, witnessed a sharp decline after the downing of the Russian plane, especially since the majority of tourists arriving in Egypt are from Russia.
