New Orleans (dpa) - The highly anticipated debut of basketball star Zion Williamson in the North American NBA league is expected to be delayed by six to eight weeks after knee surgery.

The 19-year-old winger of the New Orleans had to undergo surgery because of a meniscal tear in his right knee, as his club announced. The 2.01-meter-tall and 129-pound winger had been selected as the No. 1 New Orleans number one in the NBA's annual talent education program. Williamson is considered the next star in the best league in the world, in four prep games he had scored on average over 23 points per game. The new season starts on Wednesday night with the Pelicans' visit to defending champion Toronto Raptors.
