So far this year, eleven construction workers have lost their lives in work accidents. Eight of them died in fall accidents. This is an increase from last year - and the reason why the trade union Building during its working environment week has now chosen to check the security of 1,200 scaffolding around the country.

- It is about finding fault and possibly stopping work. Ultimately, it is about no one having to die or be seriously injured at their job, says Building's union chairman Johan Lindholm.

If an inspector considers that a scaffold is dangerous to life and health, they have the right to stop work.

False educational certificates

In addition to the fatal accidents, thousands of construction workers are injured every year in their workplaces. An important reason for this is incorrect and unsafe scaffolding.

- The scaffolding industry has a lot of problems. The courses are short and insufficient. Many testify about false educational certificates, and there are companies that use unauthorized labor to build positions, says Johan Lindholm.

Want to introduce professional certificate

Lindholm also says that existing positions are being altered illegally.

- Here we work hard to introduce requirements for professional certificates in order to build positions, he says.

The working environment week is arranged annually by Byggnads. In previous years, the focus has been on work environment issues that threaten the health of construction workers from a longer perspective, including asbestos.
