The 112 emergency service of the Cantabrian Government activated on Sunday the rescue operation of four Portuguese speleologists who made the crossing of the Cueto-Coventosa cave, in the municipality of Arredondo.

Three cavers resident in Catalonia were rescued from that cavity last July, who had become disoriented and remained inside for almost a day waiting for emergency services to arrive.

The four cavers who are wanted, belonging to a Portuguese mountaineering club, entered this Saturday through the entrance of Cueto at 11.00 , according to a statement on 112.

In the absence of news from the speleologists, three other companions entered at noon on Sunday by Coventosa to see if they found them, but they ran into a lot of water , which made it impossible to continue the march.

Therefore, at 16.30 hours they have given notice to the 112 coordination center, from where the rescue device of these four Portuguese speleologists has been mobilized.

The operation is made up of the Cantabria caving team (ESOCAN), as well as technicians from the General Directorate of Interior of the Government of Cantabria, Civil Guard agents, and volunteers from the Arredondo Civil Protection Association.

In the town of Arredondo, the Advanced Command Post (PMA) will be installed from where the operation will be monitored, in coordination with the 112 room.

Also at this point the material necessary to act in this type of interventions will be transferred.

Rescuers point to the hypothesis of an increase in the level of water inside the cavity as the cause that could have prevented the passage of speleologists.

It is expected that until this morning there will be no first news of this phase of the rescue, which is the time it takes to travel.
