For example, Karlskrona city library has set a limit of maximum SEK 20 per book, which is what a cheap e-book can cost. Popular and new titles can cost several hundred kronor to lend.

- A book can cost, for example, SEK 300, and if it were rented out once a day, it would cost us SEK 109,000 for just one year in one year, says library manager Tiffany Bovin.

Costs 82,000

Demand is constantly increasing and therefore Karlskrona city libraries are increasing the limit on how many e-books they buy.

- Previously, we had a limit of SEK 68,000 per quarter, which we now raised to SEK 82,000, says Tiffany Bovin.

Represents three percent

Ebooks have been around since the 1970s, but mostly as specialty literature. It was not until twenty years later that technology made it easier to transfer printed media to readable formats on the tablet.

Currently, e-books account for just under three percent of library loans at Swedish public libraries - but cost considerably more than that.
