The riots are not fading in Chile. The Chilean authorities on Sunday (October 20th) ordered a curfew for the second consecutive night in the capital of Santiago, while the country has been shaken for three days by a violent protest movement that has killed two people.

The measure of curfew comes into effect "from 19h local (22h GMT), stay calm and all at home," said General Javier Iturriaga, while the "state of emergency" is now extended to five regions of the country.

The day before, the president of Chile, Sebastian Pinera, said he would cancel the rise in the price of the ticket that caused, as of its announcement on October 6, a large protest movement in the country.

Two dead in a supermarket fire

In a televised speech, the center-right president said he listened "with humility" to the "voice of my compatriots" and the discontent with the high cost of living. He announced the establishment of a working group to respond to protesters' concerns.

But that did not stop the riots. In the night of Saturday to Sunday, two people died in the fire of a supermarket that was ransacked in Santiago, announced the authorities of the Chilean capital. A third person was in serious condition on Sunday.

Incidents in Valparaiso

A little earlier, on Saturday, clashes between protesters and law enforcement had taken place, against the backdrop of vandalism, looting and fires in different parts of the capital, while, moreover, thousands people marched through the streets of Santiago and gathered in public squares.

Incidents also littered the day in the port city of Valparaiso, where the Congress is sitting, and in Concepcion, in the south of the country.
