Local authorities in Bolzano, the capital of South Tyrol, on Sunday evacuated 4,000 people to defuse a World War II bomb.

The Authority announced the suspension of local bus and rail services passing through the city, and closed the Brenner road leading to the border with Austria.

The road operator, one of the busiest in Europe, said road traffic had been disrupted from 08.45 am and resumed before 11.30.

The explosive device weighs 225 kilograms. According to the Italian news agency ANSA, the evacuation included 4,000 people.
