19 October 2019The Chilean president, Sebastian Pinera, declared a state of emergency in Santiago after the violent protests that shook the capital due to the increase in the price of the metro ticket. "I declared a state of emergency and to this end, I commissioned General Javier Iturriaga del Campo to lead the Defense," announced Pinera. The increase in the price of the metro ticket provoked the reaction of the protesters who clashed with the police. The incidents have forced the police to close all the metro stations in the Chilean capital, which should remain closed throughout the weekend and gradually reopen next week. In many streets of the city the protesters erected barricades and clashed with police who used hydrants and tear gas.
