The Swedish Democrats in Norrtälje have submitted a motion to the municipal council for a begging ban.

- If there is a single person forced by criminal leagues to beg against their will, it is one too much. It does not belong in our municipality, says Andrea Kronvall, opposition council for the Sweden Democrats in Norrtälje.

Meeting with the traders

To be able to decide on the Swedish Democrats' proposal, the ruling alliance parties invited the business owners in Norrtälje to a meeting to get their view on a begging ban.

- It is good that we discuss the issue. We have done a survey and no traders have shouted out that this is a big problem. A ban is certainly not a solution. The risk is that we just move the problem elsewhere, says Boel Norman Högberg, chairman of Norrtälje trading town.

The chairman of the local council in Norrtälje Bino Drummond (M) was pleased with the meeting.

- The question is relevant now that the Swedish Democrats have put this motion and it was great to get the traders' view of the matter. Now we will go ahead and have a meeting with the police to hear their vision, he says.

Five-sex individuals begging

According to the municipality of Norrtälje, there are about five to six people begging in the city of Norrtälje and a few in other localities in the municipality. According to the police, begging does not cause any order problems.

Bino Drummond (M) says he believes that the probability of the Swedish Democrats voting being voted through in the municipal council is non-existent.

- I don't want to see a ban. I would rather see a permit process where we can help people who are in a vulnerable situation with support and help and at the same time see who is in Sweden, says Bino Drummond (M).
