It was in a competition in Poland on September 22 that the accident occurred. Linus Sundström and former teammate in Masarna, Kim Nilsson, collided with each other in a bend and Linus flew off the speedway bike.

- I felt at one time that the arm and leg had gone to hell.

"Don't think the media really got along"

He was quickly taken care of by the medical staff who loaded him into the ambulance. But during the six-hour ambulance ride, the situation changed rapidly and became serious. His brain began to swell and later a mark was found on his liver.

For a while, the situation was critical. But according to what Sundström has been told afterwards, that picture changed quite quickly again.

- I don't remember anything from the ambulance trip itself. But it went from being stable and just about one arm and one leg to becoming quite so critical - to being right so calm again. So it was fucking fast swings. I don't think the media really got along, and we probably didn't do that ourselves either.

Lay in hospital in Poland for two weeks

From what I've heard, they must have thought it was okay with me when they first put me in the ambulance. They found nothing on my head at the hospital in Gdansk, but it was just the arm and leg that was wrong.

For two weeks he was hospitalized in Poland before being flown home to Borlänge and then admitted to Falu laser.

- The first thing I heard was that in Poland they had done an incredibly good job. They said they couldn't have made this a better thing themselves. Then it felt like a stone fell from his chest.

Thinking of laying off

Without his family's support, he would never have managed this, he describes. And last Tuesday, Sundström had to go home to Folkärna, outside Avesta. Although he has now been aware of his worst crash in his career, it is not relevant to put down his career.

- The biggest thoughts on continuing or not went through the skull a few weeks before the blow. After a lot of thought and phone calls, the wind started to turn a little closer. I ran three open races before the crash and I stood on the podium in all three.

- I have had two tough seasons purely sporting, so it is clear that the thoughts have flown away whether it is worth continuing or not. But I decided two or three weeks before the crash that I will continue. This crash has not changed those plans, but it certainly makes a hack in the preparations for 2020.

Put the lid on about next season

Linus Sundström represented the Pirates during the season which was and is associated with Masarna since he lives in Avesta.

However, there will be no return to the worm club. He can't answer where he ends up - yet.

- Of course, but I can't release it right now. I will seek out new challenges with environmental change and try to get a push in my career after this crash. I wish the Masarna good luck, but I will not be part of the Masarna 2020, concludes Linus Sundström.

In the clip above he tells about the memory image from the crash and how long rehab he has in front of him.
