Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened on Saturday to "crush the heads" of Kurdish fighters in northeastern Syria if they do not pull out of the buffer zone agreed by Ankara and Washington along the border with Syria.

"The 120-hour cessation of operations will end on Tuesday night and we will continue to crush the terrorists' heads if they do not withdraw by then," Erdogan said in a speech to a crowd of thousands in Kayseri.

Turkish and Kurdish officials have traded accusations of breaching the truce announced by US Vice President Mike Pence last Thursday, allowing Kurdish fighters to withdraw to a safe area along the border.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), urged the United States on Saturday to provide a safe passage to evacuate the wounded from the border town of Ras al-Ain.
