Justice Minister Jeff Sessions resigned with immediate effect at the request of Donald Trump. Sessions, one of Trump's first supporters in 2016, has been targeted by the president for months, since he announced his abstention from the Russiagate investigation.

Sessions, one of Trump's first supporters in 2016, has been targeted by the president for months, since he announced his abstention from the Russiagate investigation.

Sessions handed in his resignation to the White House chief of staff, John Kelly. "Dear President, at his request I resign my resignation," he wrote in the letter. And the confirmation came from President Trump himself, who announced in a tweet the installation of Matthew G. Whitaker.

We are pleased to announce that Matthew G. Whitaker, Chief of Staff to Attorney General Jeff Sessions at the Department of Justice, will become our new Acting Attorney He will serve our Country well ....

The Russiagate
Trump did not personally call Sessions to fire him. According to CNN, it was John Kelly, the tycoon's chief of staff, who called the minister to demand his resignation. Although the Republicans have retained Senate control in mid-term elections, the confirmation of Sessions successor cannot be taken for granted because the future of the Russiagate investigation led by special prosecutor Robert Mueller is at stake.
