For a long time it has been mandatory for dogs to be ID-marked, but the same has not applied to cats. Now there may be change in it. In a new state investigation, it is proposed that it becomes mandatory for cat owners to ID-tag their cats, also known as barn taxes.

The purpose is to reduce the problems of homeless cats. According to the study, there are today about 100,000 homeless cats in Sweden.

Animal welfare in Karlstad is positive

At the Animal Shelter in Karlstad, where you receive homeless cats every week, you welcome the proposal for ID requirements and think it is very important.

- It's about raising the cat's status, it should be equivalent to dogs. Cats should not be wear and tear animals that you can do anything with, says Maria Berg at the Animal Shelter Karlstad.

Forbidden to abandon pets

Since April 1 this year, it is forbidden to abandon their pets, but since many cats are unmarked, it is difficult to know who the owner is. This is also hoped to come to fruition with the new law.

It is proposed that the law will start to apply on January 1, 2021 and the proposal will now be released for referral.
