Work on the budget in Falkenberg Municipality is in full swing. Initially, the proposal to save school food was five million. After a re-prioritization of the board, the figure landed at three million instead.

But the politicians were not entirely satisfied with the report.

- There were clear quality deteriorations, for example removing milk, crispbread, butter and reducing the proportion of organic. So we have actively chosen not to include all those proposals, says Per Svensson (S), the municipal council's chairman.

Several changes

The political majority in Falkenberg has now decided that savings on school meals will reach SEK 900,000. And it will be noticed in several ways.

- The salad buffet will reduce from five to three options. That means less fruit for the snacks. We also introduce that you need a medical certificate if you have food adapted for food allergies, such as gluten. There will also be no meat alternatives offered on the days when pork is served in the dining room, says Per Svensson (S).

Now, instead, the politicians are turning their eyes in another direction, namely food waste. They want to save money by dragging it down.

- According to figures we have requested, food is thrown in for between SEK 1.8 and 2.6 million each year, which is due to carelessness, bad orders and bad systems. We want to change that, explains Per Svensson (S).

Small schools remain

It is not only the school meals that the governing politicians now agree on. The same applies to the small schools in the municipality that previously had been proposed to close down.

- We are not prepared to do this because it is so important for the attractiveness of our countryside, says Per Svensson (S).

The final decisions are made by the city council clubs on the municipal budget on the last Tuesday in November.
