17 October 2019The international charity organization Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) has compiled the world ranking of the most generous donor countries.

In first place is Indonesia, followed by Australia and then New Zealand. The US is in fourth place. In the TOP-20 ranking there are 4 EU states: Ireland, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Norway, respectively in 5th, 6th, 11th and 13th place. Italy is in mid-table, in 68th place.

In the leading positions there are also poor countries, such as Myanmar (Burma) and Sri Lanka, in which the generosity of donations is explained by the religious matrix: the population professes Theravāda Buddhism.

At the bottom of the ranking is China with the worst indices despite the galloping growth of the economy. This is explained by the lack of incentives, such as the reduction of donation fees and the prohibition of collecting donations from private organizations. Furthermore, the low indices of China (the last place, the 126th) and of Russia (just above, the 117th place) are explained by the communist past, when charity was equated with the failure of the communist-style welfare state.
