In yesterday's Opinion live, developments in Syria's war were discussed, with around 200,000 people fleeing the Turkish offensive. Rafael Kardari has fought several times against IS in Syria as a soldier in the Kurdish YPG militia.

- We are united down there, all minorities. The people down there are very grateful for what YPG has done.

Forced recruitment of soldiers

Kara Hermez, chairman of the Assyrian National Federation, does not deny the YPG's efforts against IS, but believes that they simultaneously control the area with iron hand, that child soldiers are forcibly recruited and that schools are turned into weapons stockpiles.

"My friend didn't dare to put his foot out last week, because they have now started forcibly recruiting everyone between the ages of 18 and 40," she says.

- With all due respect, you do not control what is going on down there, says Rafael Kardari.
