Washington and Ankara have agreed to a ceasefire in northern Syria by freezing Turkey's "spring of peace" operation and allowing the withdrawal of Kurdish forces, US Vice President Mike Pence and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said.

Speaking at a news conference at the US embassy in Ankara, Pines said Washington had received assurances from the Syrian Kurdish YPG that an orderly withdrawal would take place.

The meeting between the US and Turkish parties took more than four hours at the presidential palace in Ankara.

"The Turkish side will stop the peace spring process for 120 hours in order to allow the withdrawal of the YPG from the safe area."

"Great news"
Pence stressed that US President Donald Trump will lift the sanctions imposed on Turkey after the declaration of the ceasefire in Syria, adding that Washington will not have soldiers on the ground in Syria.

For his part, the Turkish Foreign Minister said that his country will not stop the process of "spring of peace", but will suspend it until we monitor the withdrawal of terrorist organizations, he said.

He added that Ankara's goal is to establish a safe zone extending from the east of the Euphrates to the border of Iraq with a length of 44 km and a depth of 32 km, stressing that "the target area must be turned into a completely safe area for the refugees to return voluntarily."

Trump spoke of "great news" coming from Turkey and wrote on Twitter "millions of people will be saved," and thanked Turkish President Erdogan.
