This is a surprising letter, to say the least, that the White House has decided to publish. This is the letter of President Donald Trump addressed to his Turkish counterpart, the very day of the beginning of the Turkish offensive in the north-east of Syria, on October 9th. A short, straightforward letter in which the US President does not hesitate to say to the Turkish president, " Do not play hard ! Do not be silly ! ".

It is in an unusual tone among leaders that Donald Trump has chosen to address Reçep Tayyip Erdogan. In this one-page letter, which contains only four paragraphs, the US president warns of the consequences of the offensive launched in Syria . " You do not want to be responsible for the massacre of thousands of people, " he warns before adding that he himself does not wish to be responsible for the destruction of the Turkish economy, " what I will do, if necessary ", says he.

A barely disguised threat that precedes a proposal for discussion. Donald Trump explains to the Turkish president that General Mazloum, commander-in-chief of the SDF, the Syrian democratic forces, is ready to discuss and make concessions. After a more conciliatory tone, Donald Trump returns to the charge: " History will judge you favorably if you act in a fair and humane way. She will consider you forever the devil if things go wrong . "

A warning that ends in a very familiar tone: " Do not play hard! Do not be fooled . Ankara did not react to the publication of this letter. But this Thursday, October 17, the US Vice President Mike Pence will be in Turkey, where he must meet with Reçep Tayyip Erdogan with the hope of obtaining a ceasefire agreement .
