• Brexit.Gibraltar prepares for a hard Brexit
  • UK.Boris Johnson will request an extension of Brexit if there is no agreement on October 19

Gibraltar hosts the general elections that seem the most decisive in its history. Not because of the unknowns around the name of the occupant of the office of number 6 of Convent Place, seat of the government, since all the surveys point to the third triumph, quite clear in addition, of Fabian Picardo , but for what can happen in Brussels in relation to Brexit and the UK's exit from the EU.

From nine o'clock in the morning until ten o'clock at night the 15 polling stations that are distributed throughout the Rock will keep their doors open so that the more than 24,000 citizens with voting rights, almost 1,000 more than four years ago, decide the 17 parliamentarians and a president who is not a deputy, who will occupy their seats until 2023.

The candidates are members of the GSLP / Liberals coalition, led by Fabian Picardo, the GSD, with Keith Azopardi as number one; Together Gibraltar, a new brother-in-law and headed by Marlene Hassan Nahon, as well as two independent candidates, Robert Vasquez and JC Pons.

It should be remembered that the plain electoral system is marked by the vote of the person. That is, of the 32 applicants, each citizen can vote for 10, although in Gibraltar it is customary to opt for a block vote for a party. It is necessary to obtain nine seats to achieve the absolute majority, currently the GSLP has 10 and could repeat that result. Finally, the expansion of the Gibraltarian chamber, which was planned before the elections to go from 17 to 23 members, has not been carried out.

In the electoral campaign, in which there is no reflection day, the tone has been quite low since the Brexit issue has caught all the attention of citizens and politicians. In fact, there is some fear that participation will be lower than usual, in Gibraltar it is usually quite high.

The results, as usual, will be known early Friday morning at the John McKintosh Hall.

From the United Kingdom they have sent representatives of Democracy Volunteers, who act as observers so that everyone runs normally.
