October 05, 2017 Salvatore Buzzi, the 'ras' of the cooperatives sentenced to 19 years at the end of the 'Mafia Capital' trial, remains in prison. This was decided by the judges of the review at the time of the appeal to whom the lawyers Alessandro Diddi and Piergerardo Santoro had turned to solicit the granting of house arrest, believing that the precautionary requirements had been reduced. Buzzi has been detained for some time in the prison of Tolmezzo.

The trial ended last July in Rome. The accusation against Buzzi is corruption and auction disruption with the aggravating circumstance of the mafia method. The President of the Court did not confirm the accusation of criminal association of mafia type, recognizing most of the crimes disputed by the prosecutor of Rome. Former right-wing extremist Massimo Carminati instead was sentenced to 20 years. "The sentence recognizes the existence of a simple and aggravated criminal association - commented the Deputy Prosecutor of Rome, Paolo Ielo - it was a phenomenon of organized crime but not of mafia type". Ielo went on to stress that "two distinct criminal organizations have been recognized".

The trial opened in November 2015, with the first hearing held in the Audience Hall of the courthouse in Piazzale Clodio. Since then the proceeding has marched on at a rate of 4 hearings a week ringing a series of records by size and timing. It took about 20 months and over 240 hearings to conclude the Mafia Capital maxi-trial. Also impressive are the numbers of the documents that ended up in the records of the trial.
