October 16, 2019 "Dear Matteo and Pierluigi, even after this farewell, you will remain the bright children of the stars for Trieste. Trieste says thank you". Thus the bishop of Trieste, Msgr. Giampaolo Crepaldi, spoke to Matteo Demenego and Pierluigi Rotta, the agents killed on October 4, during the funeral.

"With this Holy Mass - he added -, Trieste offers you its last and affectionate greeting, while it remains fixed in the memory of all on 4 October, the feast of Saint Francis, Patron Saint of Italy, when a murderous, disproportionate and cruel madness , has deprived your young lives of a future full of intentions and projects ".

Crepaldi added that after that tragic afternoon, "the city of Trieste, united and composed in an exemplary manner, has widened its arms, squeezing you in a choral, strong and moved embrace". An embrace that has been extended to the Quaestor, the Police Corps and other law enforcement agencies for their unanimous acknowledgment of their difficult work, which is not always properly understood and valued. "With this embrace, Trieste wanted to say to itself and to others that its present and its future must be in the sign of civil peace, of mutual respect and of an active and fruitful harmony of good," the bishop said.

Crepaldi then recalled the "innumerable acts of love" towards the two agents, including the solidarity of the Region for families. "I am certain that, after this farewell act, Trieste - the bishop assured - will continue to remind you of his angels and, with human and civil farsightedness, has already dedicated a sign to you in perpetual memory of your sacrifice, which remains as a I warn above all for the younger generations, who are called to learn a fundamental lesson of life from you: this is to build men and women ready for service and the gift of self, while those who cultivate violence, to destroy, are destroying "hate and selfish self-interest".

In the homily, Msgr. Crepaldi also recalled the meeting with the mothers of the two agents, to whom he gave the rosary. "We have so much faith," the two ladies confided. "This singular confession of your mothers - the bishop added - struck me very much and was for me like a very vivid testimony that made me understand that the dark darkness of your death that had enveloped everyone and everything had been torn by light, although tenuous and tender, of a star, the star of faith ".

"While I was meditating on the star of faith that also illuminated your life path, it came to me spontaneously to go with the mind - Crepaldi confessed, concluding - to an amateur video that I had watched, produced during one night while you were doing your work , where, with the joyful maturity of your thirty years, you invited the citizens of Trieste to sleep peacefully, because to watch over their security there was you who called yourself children of the stars ".

The funeral is attended by various authorities, including Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese, Police Chief Franco Gabrielli, Chamber President Roberto Fico, Senate Vice-President Ignazio La Russa, the councils of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and the Municipality of Trieste , former ministers Matteo Salvini and Roberta Pinotti. Outside, there are, among others, representatives of the Police Forces, voluntary associations, civil protection and fire brigades.

The funeral procession had left the police station accompanied by the guard of honor and had advanced between two wings of the crowd: thousands of Trieste people who accompanied the coffins with their applause. In the nave in front of the altar various crowns of flowers have been placed, including that of the President of the Republic, of the Ministries of the Interior and of Justice, of the Chamber and of the Senate.
