16 October 2019The Ocean Viking ship is docked at the port of Taranto, Sos Mediterranee and Medici senza Frontiere, with 176 migrants on board. There are 131 men, 12 women, 4 of whom are pregnant, and 33 minors of whom 23 are unaccompanied. Given their very first assistance, the migrants will be transferred to the hotspot of the port of Taranto.

Here they will be subjected to identification and photo registration procedure. Afterwards unaccompanied minors will find temporary accommodation in Taranto while all others will be transferred to other locations. Yesterday the prefect of Taranto, Antonella Bellomo, presided over a coordination summit with the various institutions, associations and police forces involved in today's landing.

There was some tension because a representative of the League of Salvini was allowed to enter the port area while the garrison of '#ioaccolgo', CGIL and other movements, announced yesterday, was kept out. There was therefore a meeting, a mediation, and a delegation of five people between '#ioaccolgo' and the CGIL was eventually brought into the port.

During the night, 172 people disembarked in Lampedusa rescued by patrol boats
172 migrants landed overnight in Lampedusa after being rescued in the Sicilian Channel by Italian patrol boats. The refugees were aboard a barge in difficulty 35 nautical miles southwest of Lampedusa, in the Sar Maltese area. After receiving the alarm from a satellite telephone, the operations center of the Port of Rome Offices immediately informed the Maltese authority that it took over the coordination of the search and rescue operation, requesting collaboration from Italy.

Two Coast Guard patrol boats and one from the Guardia di Finanza who transhipped the migrants were sent to the site. The three units then sailed to Lampedusa after Malta had denied permission to disembark by indicating the island of Pelagie as a place of safety, that is, a safe haven. The 172 migrants immediately after the landing were transferred to the island's hot spot.
