Today is International Touch Day, and SVT went out to talk about hugs and to hand out hugs. Touch is important as other people touch us, the heart starts to slow down. A hug in the morning can prevent stress during the day, says researchers at Linköping University.

What happens when another person touches us

Researchers have investigated what happens when another person touches us, compared to when we touch ourselves. They have found that the brain suppresses the processing of emotional impressions from their own touch.

- We found a very clear difference between being touched by someone else and touching oneself. By personal touch, activity in several different parts of the brain decreases, says Rebecca Böhme, a researcher at the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine.
