In the fall of 2015, ÖB Sverker Göranson stated "that a smaller submarine violated Swedish water" at a press conference. The possible submarine was hunted during an operation called "The Eagle".

The Armed Forces had made observations with the help of their censors, which clearly showed that it was a submarine, according to ÖB. But it turned out to be something completely different. It now tells a person with insight into the matter for Svenska Dagbladet.

mistake

On October 21, 2014, two Swedish submarines listened to suspected violations. At the same time, one of the Swedish Maritime Administration's vessels worked to salvage one of SMHI's buoys, which is used to make measurements for weather forecasts. There was something wrong with the buoy so it needed to be repaired.

To locate and communicate with the buoy, you send an acoustically coded signal that signals to the buoy that it will come up to the surface, which you did this time as well. Signal was picked up by the older submarine. The signal was what was regarded as the strongest evidence that a foreign submarine violated Swedish water. Hence ÖB's statement at the press conference.

But after further analysis work, they became doubtful. With a recording from the other submarine, which had more modern and better equipment on board, one could find the sound and by counting, among other things, bearing. Then you could figure out that it was about SMHI's buoy. A buoy that also collects data for the defense force.

Then the government learned

The defense leadership and the government were informed of the mistake in May 2015. Only four months later, the Riksdag was informed and today the information reaches the public.

The defense decision in 2015 with increased funding of ten billion and strengthened resources for submarine hunting had been adopted in mid-June. Similarly, the submarine business at the end of June, where the state decided to buy two new A26 submarines from Saab, writes SvD.
